Connect your AI to your Fastio workspaces
Fastio's hosted MCP server lets Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor and other MCP clients work with the files, workspaces and shares in your Fastio account. There is nothing to install: Fastio runs the server, and your AI client connects to it over the web.
The AI acts with your own Fastio account and only with the access you grant when you sign in. It can find and read files, search across a workspace, organize folders, upload files, and manage shares, comments and members.
Connect
Use the address for your client. All three reach the same account; each one presents the tools in the shape that client works best with.
https://mcp.fast.io/mcp/toolsTools grouped by area, with a read tool and a separate tool for changes in each area.
https://mcp.fast.io/mcp/operationsOne tool for each operation.
https://mcp.fast.io/mcp/codeA compact search-and-execute interface over the Fastio API.
Claude (web, desktop and mobile)
- Open Customize → Connectors in Claude.
- Add a custom connector and paste
https://mcp.fast.io/mcp/tools. - Select Connect. A Fastio sign-in window opens; sign in and choose what to allow (see Sign-in and permissions).
- In a chat, turn Fastio on from + → Connectors and ask about your files.
ChatGPT
- In ChatGPT, open Settings → Security and login and turn on Developer mode. Availability can depend on your workspace's policy.
- Go to chatgpt.com/plugins and select the plus button.
- Name it Fastio, enter
https://mcp.fast.io/mcp/operationsas the MCP server URL, and create the connection. - Sign in to Fastio when prompted.
Claude Code
claude mcp add --transport http fast-io https://mcp.fast.io/mcp/code
Run /mcp inside Claude Code to sign in.
Cursor
Or add it to ~/.cursor/mcp.json yourself:
{
"mcpServers": {
"fast-io": { "url": "https://mcp.fast.io/mcp/code" }
}
}
Other MCP clients
Add a remote MCP server with the streamable HTTP transport at https://mcp.fast.io/mcp/tools. The server uses OAuth 2.0; clients that support MCP authorization discover the sign-in flow automatically.
Sign-in and permissions
You sign in on Fastio's own sign-in page in your browser. Your password never passes through the AI, and no tool accepts a password, API key or verification code.
On the Review Permissions screen you choose:
- Read Only or Read & Write. With Read Only, tools that change data are not offered.
- Which organizations and workspaces the connection can reach: none, all, or specific ones.
Tools that only read are labelled read-only, so your AI client can run them without asking. Tools that create, change or delete data are labelled as such, and Claude and ChatGPT ask you before running them.
Disconnect
- In your AI client, remove or disconnect the Fastio connector.
- In Fastio, open Settings → Devices & Agents → Connected Devices and select Revoke on the connection.
What it can do
| Area | Reading | Changing |
|---|---|---|
| Organizations and workspaces | List them, view details and members | Create a workspace |
| Files and folders | Browse, view details, read text, recent files, version history, trash | Create folders, copy, move, rename, move to trash, restore |
| Search | Keyword and semantic search within a workspace or share, with short excerpts; quote a passage from a file | — |
| Metadata | Read file metadata and search by it | Set metadata values |
| Upload | Check an upload's progress | Upload a file, or import one from a web address |
| Downloads | Get a download link for a file, or a ZIP link for a folder | — |
| Shares | List shares, view details | Create, update and delete shares |
| Comments | Read comments | Add and delete comments |
| Members | List members | Add members or invite them by email, and remove members |
| Activity | Search recent activity and events | — |
In Claude and coding agents, the connector can also send and track e-signature requests, manage pending invitations, update your profile, and chat with Fastio's AI about the files in a workspace. These are not part of the ChatGPT app.
Example prompts
- “Find the Q3 budget spreadsheet in my Finance workspace and summarize the totals.”
- “What does the Acme MSA say about the termination notice period?”
- “Who has access to the Acme share?”
- “List the files that changed in my Legal workspace this week.”
- “Create a folder called Contracts 2026 in my Legal workspace.”
- “Move the Old Drafts folder to the trash.” Deleted files and folders go to the workspace trash and can be restored.
What it doesn't do
- It doesn't handle billing or payments.
- It doesn't accept or return passwords, API keys or verification codes.
- It doesn't read your chat history or memory; each tool sees only what is sent to it.
- It doesn't generate images, audio or video.
Data and privacy
The server runs on Fastio's own domain and calls only Fastio's API. File contents and search results pass from your Fastio account to the AI client you connected, and what that client does with them is governed by its provider's terms. Fastio's handling of your data is described in the Privacy Policy, and use of the service is covered by the Terms of Service.
Troubleshooting
The sign-in window closes or loops without connecting
Remove the connector from your AI client and add it again. If you use a password manager or a strict browser extension, allow pop-ups for fast.io during sign-in.
The AI says a tool isn't available, or tools look out of date
Some clients keep the tool list from when a chat started. Start a new chat, or disconnect and reconnect the connector.
A change was refused
The connection was granted Read Only access, or it can't reach that organization or workspace. Disconnect, reconnect, and choose Read & Write or the workspaces you need on the Review Permissions screen.
Search finds file names but not what's inside them
Content search needs Intelligence turned on for the workspace. In Fastio, open the workspace's settings, go to the Intelligence tab and turn on Intelligence. New files are searchable once they have been processed.
A download link stopped working
Download and ZIP links expire after about two hours. Ask for a new link.
I set Fastio up with an older address
The older addresses https://mcp.fast.io/mcp and https://mcp.fast.io/sse keep working. For a new setup, use the address for your client under Connect.
